The initial pyutils examples were .py files. This makes then easy for everyone to use no matter what platform.
Although I like notebooks, opening a notebook on the mu2e machines is a multi-stage effort whereas opening a .py can be done in any editor.
I would advocate for both to suit all audiences.
Personally I have no disk quota to even be able to open a notebook on the mu2e machines so will make my examples .py files.
