else/scala not working

but clicking on "scala" object and selecting a scala file doesn't load anything

Please always supply version and names of your OS, DAW and plöugdata plugin type when reporting errors.
Also, you are referring to a thread, which is 4 years old. This might not be compatible to today's version of neither Puredata nor Plugdata.

the else library is marked as part of PlugData, that's why i reported back

Arch Linux, PlugData v0.9.3, either in standalone or as lv2 on last git of ardour... the "scala" block despite asking for a file doesn't load it, despite being a new project or the the .pd file on the mentioned thread

I can reproduce this issue, no idea what's causing it but I will investigate!

it seems it's a ELSE problem: porres/pd-else#2233

those are "sfz~" issues, not "scala" issues :)
